| 内容記述 | We can see Lucy Snowe's awakening from romantic love to sexual reality in the change of her masters, Graham Bretton to Paul Emanuel. Firstly, Lucy tries to find the ideal of spiritual bond of romantic love in Graham, but he rejects sexuality and confines women in a “sacred home" as pure angels. Therefore, Lucy's self nearly disintegrates. On the contrary, Paul accepts women's sexuality, and he can see Lucy not as an angel but as a real woman. Through the relationship with him, Lucy releases her own sexuality and develops into an autonomous woman. However, she does not cast off her romantic love ideal because she knows that sexual passion often drives a woman into becoming a slavish mistress. She is afraid of losing her mental and economic independence, so she makes much of the spiritual bond of romantic love as well as the sexual fulfilment. Yet, different from when she was in love with Graham, she can notice that pure spirituality is romantic illusion. She comes to balance romantic spirituality and sexual reality. Furthermore, Charlotte depicts not only Lucy's sexual fulfilment but also her instinctive dread of sexual attachment to Paul, and thus she totally represents women's sexual reality. | |||||

| 内容記述 | シャーロット・ブロンテの『ヴィレット』において、ヒロインのルーシー・スノウがグレアムへの思慕から脱却し、ポールとの間に愛情関係を築くまでのマスターの変遷には、彼女の romantic loveからsexual reality へ目覚めるまでの成長が見て取れる。まず、ルーシーはグレアムの中に romantic love の感情的な絆の理想を見出すが、彼はセクシャリティを拒絶し、女性を pure angel として家庭に閉じ込めてしまう危険なmasterである。そのためにルーシーは自ら考え、行動する能力を奪われ、彼女のアイデンティティは危機にさらされる。それに対しポールは女性のセクシャリティを受け入れているので、ルーシーを天使としてではない現実の女性として見なしている。こうしたポールとの関係を通して、ルーシーは抑圧していた自らのセクシャリティを解放し、romantic love の幻想から脱却して、主体性のある女性へと成長する。しかし、彼女は romantic love の理想を捨ててしまったわけではない。シャーロットの作品には sexual passion に圧倒されて身も心も男性に従属してしまう女性が多く登場することからわかるように、彼女は sexual involvement によって自己を失ってしまうことを恐れており、それゆえに肉体的なつながりだけではなく精神的な絆をも重要視しているのである。ただ彼女は romantic love が幻であることを認識しており、そこに sexual reality を求める間違いはおかさない。彼女は romantic love の理想を否定するのではなく、sexual reality とのバランスをとれる女性になったのである。さらに、シャーロットは sexual fulfillment だけではなく、sexual attachment に対する本能的な恐怖をも提示することで、女性の sexual reality を余すところなく克明に描いたのである。 | |||||
