To elucidate the concept of liberal arts, however, we must refer to its 2,500 years old tradition in western intellectual history. By rethinking the origins of the time-honored concept, we can recognize the elementary meaning of the word liberal.What did it mean to be liberal in the Republic? Cicero regarded as becoming for a free man activities that could win his fellow men\u0027s affection and support. In relation to his people, a citizen should behave so as to be loved, praised and trusted by them. Effective ways for the acquisition of glory are beneficence and liberality. To be liberal means here to be generous, bountiful and open-handed. A free man will do good to others, not from pity for their misery, but as investment for his own glory. His truthfully voluntary spirit deserves to be named “civic humanism.\" In principle Cicero as a political philosopher prefers his Republic community to arts and sciences. In other words, the ancient liberal arts are esteemed as politically generous education.
