| 内容記述 | This study has examined George MacDonald’s first fantasy novel for adults, Phantastes（1858）and “The Golden Key”（1867）as the transitional process on the way toward his last fantasy novel, Lilith（1895）. The theme of death and the importance of the self-sacrificial spirit which are described through these two works, are related with MacDonald's own experiences and beliefs. Furthermore, this investigation has revealed that these themes become the foundation of Lilith by being associated with sin and relief. | |||||

| 内容記述 | 本稿ではGeorge MacDonaldによる最初の大人向けファンタジー小説、Phantastesと短編“The Golden Key” を、彼の最後のファンタジー小説であるLilithへ推移する過程として考察した。二つの物語を通して示された死と生を巡るテーマと自己犠牲的精神の重要性は、MacDonald の経験や、手紙や説教に見受けられる彼自身の信念と密接に関係している。この研究によって、これらのテーマが罪や救済の観念と結びつくことでLilithの基盤となることが明らかとなった。 | |||||
