| 内容記述 | The practice of international location scouting for anime began in the early 1970s, when Isao Takahata, Hayao Miyazaki and others visited Switzerland to seek inspiration for Heidi, Girl of the Alps (1974), the World Masterpiece Theatre adaptation of Johanna Spyri’s 1880 novel, Heidi. This kind of field research is now common when making anime with a foreign setting. However, later adaptations of foreign children’s books by Studio Ghibli, the company Takahata and Miyazaki founded in 1985, have tended until very recently to avoid using identifiable foreign locations, preferring indeterminate settings or the relocation of the action to Japan itself. This article charts the possible motivations and consequences of this shifting attitude to international location scouting, considering both Miyazaki’s own practice and that of his son Gorō and protégé Hiromasa Yonebayashi, in their anime features adapted from British novels: Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), The Borrower Arrietty (2010), Memories of Marnie (2014), Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2017) and Āya and the Witch (2020). | |||||||
