Bresnan (1976) revised Chomsky's A-over-A Principle, requiring that a transformation T apply under a proper analysis π that is maximal relative to all proper analyses that agree with π on all context predecates in C. To justify this, she employs X notation and applies it to cross-categorial transformations, such as Question Movement, Comparative Deletion, Complex NP Shift and Pied Piping. This paper aims to examine the validity and adequateness of the application to Comparative Deletion. The findings are: 1. In employing X notation, the decisive reasoning is lacking in the category features. Therefore the subcategorization in type 1 violates the principle that every category of type i+1 contains the category of type i as the obliga tory major element, and the categories of type 1 may be come recursive. 2. Bresnan does not indicate how and where Q which is not dominated by N or A or P appears in the formulation or the diagram. She only de fines how Q is subcategorized. 3. The notions of structural and referential identity must be revised.}, pages = {137--148}, title = {The Relativized A-over-A Principleの一考察 : Comparative Deletionに適用された場合}, volume = {28}, year = {1977} }
