 note = {This essay intends to examine the representations of male madness and the peculiarity of narrative strategy and structure in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The intricate strategy and structure create mysteries surrounding the “double being” of Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde, and bring out the truth buried in the heart of the text. This essay, focusing on the narrative strategy, shows that the truth about Jekyll and Hyde is woven into the text and is veiled toward readers to assure them that Jekyll’s confession is the preferable solution to the mysteries about the strange case. We first examine how the characterization of Jekyll and Hyde is constructed, and show that it is the narrator’s implications that impress upon readers their apparent differences in appearance, personality, social status, and occupation. Second, it takes into consideration the narrative strategy that enables Hyde to be regarded as Jekyll’s second self, and discloses that the well-known double personality is manipulated as a device to conceal the truth and induce readers to accept Jekyll’s statement as the preferable ending. Moreover, it becomes clear that the strange case is actually narrated from different perspectives̶those of John Gabriel Utterson, Richard Enfield, Hastie Lanyon, and Jekyll̶ which undermines the possibility of the absolute fact or truth behind the case. The essay concludes, from these analyses, that Stevenson made it possible to describe what cannot be depicted in a realistic literary form through the invention of an innovative narrative strategy like those used in modern fiction.
本稿はロバート・ルイス・スティーブンソン（Robert Louis Stevenson）のStrange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde （1886）における男性の狂気の表象と語りの手法と構造の特異性について分析した。複雑な語りの手法と構造はヘンリー・ジキル（Henry Jekyll） /エドワード・ハイド（Edward Hyde）の二重人格という秘密を創り出し、テクストの内部に隠蔽されている真相を明らかにしている。本稿は、語りの手法に注目し、ジキルの告白が奇妙な事件に関する謎についての望まれた解決策であると読者がみなすために、ジキルとハイドに関する隠された真相がテキストに内在し、読者から隠されていることを明らかにした。最初に、どのようにジキルとハイドの性格描写がなされているか分析し、彼らの外見、性格、社会的地位、職業における明らかな差異を読者に印象づけているのは語り手の暗示であると指摘した。次に、ハイドがジキルのもう一つの人格であるとみなす語りの手法を分析し、周知である二重人格は真相を隠し、読者がジキルの告白を望まれた結末として受け入れるための装置として機能していることを明らかにした。さらに、奇妙な事件は実際は異なる視点―ジョン・ゲイブリエル・アタスン、リチャード・エンフィールド、ヘイスティ―・ラニョン、ジキル―から語られており、そのことはこれからの視点から語られた事件についての絶対的な事実や真実が存在する可能性を揺るがしていると指摘した。これらの分析から、スティーブンソンはリアリズム文学では描くことができなかったことを、モダニズム文学において用いられているような革新的な語りの手法を発明することによって描くことができたのだと論じた。},
