| 内容記述 | In The Tale of Genji, the character of Lady Akashi has traditionally been evaluated as someone who, while refusing to become a meshiudo, ultimately settles into the role of an ushiromi （female servant）. However, recent scholarship has begun to recognize her as a female servant while also attempting to highlight her role as a mother or maternal grandmother. Was Lady Akashi connected to Genji in a role other than that of a female servant? Though Lady Akashi is married to Genji through the efforts of her father, the differences in status between them become evident following the birth of Princess Akashi. Later, while living a concealed life in the winter quarters of Rokujō-in as an unknown “woman from a mountain village,” she enters service as an ushiromi to be involved in the life of the princess, now a consort at court. This, in turn, exposes her lower social standing, leaving her with no option but to work as a female servant. However, her role gives the empress a chance to learn about the family’s past. The story of the Akashi family, once ridiculed as kokoro takashi （high-minded）, has come to be recognized and admired by the public. Yet, in the end, no matter how she tries to maintain appearances, Lady Akashi is nothing more than a female servant of Genji. The position of ushiromi has given her a glory that is unbecoming of her status, but her status is still that of a female servant. |

| 内容記述 | 『源氏物語』における明石の君という女性は、召人になることを拒絶しながら結局は後見という立場に落ち着いた、と評価されてきた。しかしながら近年は、明石の君をいちおうは「女房格」だとは認めつつも、母あるいは外祖母としての姿を見出そうとする論がある。果たして明石の君は「侍女」以外の立場で光源氏と結ばれていたのだろうか。 入道の奮闘によって源氏と結ばれた明石の君だったが、姫君の誕生をきっかけに誤魔化されていた身分差が露呈していく。その後も六条院冬の町で出自不明の「山里の女」として出自を誤魔化していたものの、ついに入内後の姫君と公然と関わるためにそれまで避けてきた「侍女」という社会的地位を受け容れるのだった。「後見」となることで、結果として侍女にしかなり得ない自らの身分を曝すことにはなったが、女御が一族のこれまでの軌跡を知るきっかけとなり、かつて「苦しや」と嘲笑される他なかった「心高さ」が報われたのだと、明石一族の物語も世人に共有され、称賛される。その一方で結局明石の君は、どう取り繕おうと源氏の前では侍女でしかない。「後見」という立場は、「身のほど」に似合わぬ栄達に繋がる一方で、あくまで明石の君自身の「身のほど」相応の、現実的な落としどころと言えよう。 |
