内容記述 It is remarkable that much of the recent linguistic researches is characterized by the use of computers. In this paper, utilizing OCP and SNOBOL on both a main frame and a personal computer, we examined the vocabulary of the three English textbooks of the Freshman Oral English course used in the last three years, which are all compiled by English native speakers for non-native intermediate students. The results of this research show it clearly that these textbooks are significantly useful for Japanese students in that they incorporate a considerable number of words closely related to everyday life in English-speaking societies. This feature is of great importance because these words are analysable as having only a small chance of appearing in the English textbooks compiled in Japan either for college reading courses or for the high school English classes. On the other hand, however, the examination has revealed that not necessarily all the basic English words (as exemplified in Cambridge English Lexicon) are covered in these textbooks. Moreover, these textbooks uniformly lack much of the vocabulary related to abstract ideas and conceptions, which we would reasonably expect to be established in the fundamental vocabulary of college students. Other lexical characteristics are: the extensive use of the contracted forms of not, be, have, do, will and would, the use of various 'fillers' and intensifiers peculiar to spoken English, request expressions diversified according to the varieties of situations in which they are used, and the abundant inclusion of place names of the regions other than those in the UK. All the characteristics mentioned above have led us to the conclusion that these three textbooks are most appropriate teaching material if we use them as part of well-organized and balanced college English courses.
