内容記述 Roger Caillois (1913-78) was a modern-day French philosopher who developed a unique methodology to elucidate the nature-beauty relationship. This methodology which he named "sciences of the diagonal", implies his intensive research into the correlations between various natural and artificial objects. In effect, he worked on comparing such oddly assorted pairs of objects as butterfly wings and paintings, or figured stones and abstract art. As a result of his comparative studies, he came to one conclusion: nature is the origin of beauty and, at the same time, its absolute endorser. Certainly, Caillois' point of view toward the nature was unique. However, he tried to confirm it by putting forward the evidence of figured stones, which have mysteriously elaborate patterns on their cut surfaces. The timeless beauty of these patterns, concealed in the form of stone, certainly inspired Caillois to decode the mystery of the dynamic creativity of nature, and led him to advance an original theory of the nature-human relationship. Caillois emphatically claims that man himself exists as a mere component of nature. He could have a relationship with nature by recognising this fact? For Caillois, in other words, beauty is not a product of man's brain; rather, it enters his mind only when he accepts nature's creativity.
